Eksteenskuil
- 72 interviews were conducted in and around Eksteenskuil with 57 different informants
- 10 interviews were conducted with 6 different Traidcraft staff
- 7 interviews were conducted with 8 people in other South African based organisations (such as Fairtrade South Africa (FTSA))
- 89 interviews were conducted in total directly in relation to Eksteenskuil
- 44 representatives from 27 households within Eksteenskuil were interviewed, comprising of 20 men and 24 women. These included 23 Eksteenskuil Agricultural Co-operative (EAC) member households, 1 landless and 3 non-member households. 8 households on North Island, 12 on Middle and 7 on South
- 14 interviews were conducted with 13 different people representing 10 different organisations or departments in the Keimoes/Upington area
- 5 EAC Board members were interviewed, both EAC staff members and at least 4 members of the Women’s Forum
Flower Valley
- 52 interviews were conducted in and around the Agulhas Plain with 55 different informants
- These included 4 Flower Valley Conservation Trust (FVCT) staff members, 2 CapeNature employees, 12 packshed workers, 15 pickers, 2 packshed managers, 8 suppliers, 4 FVCT Trustees, 8 external stakeholders (such as conservation Non-Governmental Organisations (NGO), retailers and so forth)
- 9 other interviews with 9 different informants were conducted in South Africa (SA) and in the United Kingdom (UK), which directly informed this case study
- A total of 61 interviews with 64 people were conducted
Other Categories
- 16 commercial informants were interviewed, including 8 retailers (6 in UK and 2 in SA), 3 fruit processors, 1 importing agent in the UK, 1 SA exporting agent, 2 producer representative bodies and 1 training organisation
- 1 interview was held with an auditing company
- 11 NGOs were interviewed (7 in SA and 4 in the UK)
Circa 190 people were formally interviewed in total. In addition, numerous informal conversations produced data, which has been recorded in field notes.
